Moving into your new home during the warmer months is certainly more convenient than moving in the winter. There are a lot of details you’ll want to consider for a winter move that wouldn’t even cross your mind for a summer move. Freezing temperatures, tracking snow and mud into the house, possibly driving a moving truck in the snow, it can all be a hassle. We’ve put together a list of tips to help make your winter move a little easier and more manageable.
Dress Warm
The weather outside is frightful, so even though you’ll be a little warmer from moving around, you’ll want to dress in some warm layers. A few layers are a better option than just a winter coat because you might get too hot from the effort of moving and want to take the coat off, only to be freezing the next minute. Layering a sweatshirt or jacket underneath your coat will allow you to maintain a comfortable temperature. Gloves are a very good idea, but be smart about which gloves you choose. If you choose gloves that are too thin so that you don’t risk dropping items, your hands might get too cold. If you choose gloves that are very warm and thick, you might run into some issues carrying your things into the new house. FInd a middle ground! Your footwear will be important as well. You’ll want something that’s non-slip, keeps your feet warm, and is also waterproof if there is snow on the ground. Which brings us to our next tip.
Weather Forecast
Keep an eye on the weather forecast on the days leading up to your move. This will help you prepare for a variety of factors, including what you decide to wear. You might get lucky and find that you’ll be moving on a warmer day! You also might decide that you need to postpone your move due to a blizzard. Check the forecast daily to see if anything changes and make your plans accordingly.
Clear Paths
Moving heavy objects can be especially dangerous with snow and ice on the ground. The last thing you need is to be injured from a slip on moving day. Before you start moving anything in, think about the path you’ll be taking from the moving truck into your new home. Make sure the walkway is shoveled and salted to prevent any ice from forming.
Turn Off The Heat
This may sound counter intuitive, but your door will constantly be open during your move, allowing the frigid air inside all day. This will not only make your heater ineffective, it will rack up your bill before you’ve even settled in. Dress appropriately and you won’t need the heater on when you move in. Once everything is inside you can turn up the heat and get comfortable.
Protect The Floor
We’ve covered the walkways outdoors, but what about the paths you’ll take when you get through the door? You don’t want to be tracking snow, mud/dirt, and salt all over your floors in your new home. Whether your flooring is carpet, wood, or tile, you should place some mats outside the door to stomp or wipe your feet on. You should also lay down some cheap plastic sheeting or tarps inside to protect the floor.
BONUS: Hot Chocolate/Cider In The Kitchen
This bonus tip is great because it will help with both the temperature and your morale. If you can find the time, take a hot chocolate or hot cider break with your moving team (family) and talk about something other than moving. It will allow everyone to warm up and take a moment to enjoy each other’s company and the new home.
